At police headquarters, Boston Detective Lance Sullivan was reading a preliminary report on the murder of Father Thomas.

His new partner, Sean McGee was reading another report on Ben LaDuke. Sean looked up at Lance and asked, “What are the odds of two different people getting killed by having their throats sliced open in the same neighborhood on the same night, probably by the same man? Even the weapons seem to be the same.”

Lance leaned back in his chair. “I noticed that as well. We need to find out the common link between these two men.”

Sean snorted. “What makes you think there is one?”

“There has to be something they have in common,” Lance insisted. “Otherwise, it’s just too coincidental. And you know I hate when things are too coincidental.”

“We all do Detective.” Sean rolled his eyes. “If there’s a link between these two men we’ll find it. I know this guy Ben has a police record, everything from drunk and disorderly to drug possession to domestic assault. A real winner he was. His ex-wife has a restraining order against him. She’s trying to keep herself clean and sober but she just lost her apartment a few months ago. She can’t keep a damn job.” He continued reading the report. “They had one kid but lost track of him years ago. They were actually Foster parents when they were younger. Can you believe that shit? There’s no way they just suddenly turned to crap. I bet they mistreated many of them.”

“And maybe one came back to get revenge?”

Sean shrugged. “Ya never know.”

“Yeah, but Father Thomas had a decent rep. So what did he do wrong?” Lance wondered aloud.

Both men looked back at their files as if the papers might give them the answers.

Lance got onto his PC and looked into many files. “Hey, pull up the foster care files from that time, will ya?” he called to Sean. “I need some help with this.”

Sean nodded and tapped the keys on his laptop.

Ten minutes went by with phones ringing in the background, as both men seemed to block it all out while searching. Often, detectives spent more time on computers than actually being on the street. It was all in what you knew and this was what mainly solved cases.

“I think I found something. One Carter LaDuke or aka Carter Kyle. His dad went missing one day... there had been a lot of blood at the scene when the cops found him hiding in a closet.” Sam paused. “Come over here, Lance.”

Lance got up and looked over the info on the screen. “Well, fuck. Dice Kyle? Man, he was one of the original Sinners, back in the day.”

“The Sinners?” Sean asked. “You mean Boston’s own Sinners MC?”

“That very one but back then, there had been rumors about Dice when he got kicked out. He was dealing and the MC didn’t like it.”

Sean looked further in the record. “Foster system took care of his son from the age of eight until he was seventeen then the kid took off and no one has seen him since.
